A CHEAP DEVICE FOR THE MAJORITY WORLD

In the Majority World, a mobile phone is the only electronic device many will ever own. We believe that there is huge potential for evangelism, even for those who only have 'feature phones' rather than the more versatile 'smartphones':
http://www.internetevangelismday.com/mobile-outreach.php

Now here's a device from Vodaphone that essentially creates a 'real' online keyboard computer for under $100. "Of all the devices like this I've seen, the One Laptop Per Child project included, this one makes the most sense. It clearly just 'works' out of the box and the size and form-factor are excellent," says Crunchgear's John Biggs:
http://www.crunchgear.com/2011/02/11/vodafone-releases-webbox-100-internet-surfing-keyboard/

In fact it is similar to the direction the richer West may also take within a few years. Analysts predict that we could be using a high-spec smartphone for all our computing needs. When travelling, it will operate in stand-alone mode, as now. But at home, it will dock into a keyboard/screen combo (essentially a laptop without the 'works') providing easy keyboarding and a big screen:

MOBILE-FRIENDLY SITES - a serious question that many site owners have barely yet considered is: how to make a website friendly for mobile phones. A first consideration is to understand the context in which people use mobiles to visit a site:

COMMUNICATING WELL

WORD CLOUDS assign size to demonstrate the frequency of word use in text. 66Clouds.com have done this for the entire Bible. How would a word cloud of my conversation look? Or what should a word cloud for evangelism to outsiders look like?

DEVELOPING A GOSPEL-CENTERED TAG LINE - ideas from Clarity Evangelist:
http://www.willmancini.com/2011/02/how-to-develop-a-compelling-gospel-centered-tagline-for-your-church.html

OVERSTATEMENT - insightful piece by Michael Patton on why the overstatement of a case always turns people off. A desire to be seen to be 'true to scripture' or not demonstrate doubts about our position, can lead us to counterproductive overstatement, ungenerously expressed. So can our tendency to migrate to the end of a spectrum on any position, rather than occupying the often more difficult and nuanced balance nearer the center of the spectrum. (The theological equivalent of the medically-wrong 'one vitamin tablet good, 10 tablets better' assumption.)

TAKERS - how should we relate to high-maintenance 'takers'?

HOW TO WRITE A SENTENCE. What! Anyone can do that. Well, it's a bit more complicated, says the Gospel Coalition:

CHURCH WEBSITES: LifeWay Research finds churches divided on website usage. Though most churches have a website, there is a divide between congregations that use their sites only for one-way communication and those that maximize their online presence with interactive technology

CREATING A JESUS REVOLUTION WITH SOCIAL MEDIA - The use of social media is credited with energizing the revolution in Egypt. And what does it teach us about using social media for outreach locally and internationally? Article by Jeff Gibson, Brandon Cox, and Chris Forbes:

HUMOR - OUTNUMBERED SITCOM

OUTNUMBERED is a popular TV sitcom in UK, about a family with three children:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Outnumbered

Sadly for those outside UK, it is not streamed or archived on the BBC site. (The series IS available on Region 2 DVDs from Amazon.com and elsewhere.) Here's an amusing clip that has gone viral - 'Awkward Questions About Jesus'.

This raises the question of being prepared for difficult questions, and knowing where to find good resources to help. And also the significance of humor in communication, with links to two free e-booksk on the biblical signifance of humor:

CARTOONING, COMICS AND ANIMATION

These visual artforms are an incredibly powerful means of evangelism in many cultures. There will be a School of Cartooning and Animation for Missions starting on July 4th, 2011, in Chiang Mai, Thailand. The application deadline is May 31, so if you plan to take the school, it's good to start the application process early. (There will also be a school in 2012.) These are vital skills for evangelism and discipleship.

Comix35 also offer training, and have a session at a Quebec conference 7-10 April, and have launched a Manga competition:
http://www.internetevangelismday.com/blog/archives/3416

where you also can see more cartoons, comics and animations (with the chilling Alma animation, and trailers for Studio Ghibli and The Illusionist.

TECH TIPS

- non-techies look away now

EUDORA - it's now open source. I always loved it best!
http://www.eudora.com/

VIDEO-EDITING SOFTWARE - listing from Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_video_editing_software

FREE SOFTWARE FOR MULTIMEDIA - recommended for journalists, but far wider application:
http://adamwestbrook.wordpress.com/2011/02/09/10-free-and-totally-legal-programs-every-multimedia-journalist-should-have/

PDF FORMAT - tech stuff:
http://www.devwebpro.co.uk/devwebprouk-46-20110202HowToBetterUnderstandthePDFFormat.html

CMS - build your own with PHP and MySQL in a few hours:
http://www.elated.com/articles/cms-in-an-afternoon-php-mysql/

HTACCESS - Password Protecting Your Pages with htaccess
http://www.elated.com/forums/topic/4673/

APPLE 'HOME SCREEN': When you bookmark a site on iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch, you get option to "Add to Home Screen". This produces a little icon based on a screen capture of the site on the home screen of the device - like a bigger version of a favicon. Better though: make your own - just create a 57px x 57px png graphic icon, post it online, and link to it in your page header with code similar to:
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" href="images/MySiteIcon.png" />
Another great tip from Elated - sign up for their newsletter:
http://www.elated.com

WORDPRESS PLUGIN: I nearly started WW3 by accidentally hitting 'publish' button for an embargoed item being prepared in advance. Get yourself a confirmation popup box to stop this happening - search and install 'Publish confirmation' plugin:
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/publish-confirmation/

OTHER PLUGINS: add a custom footer to every post:
http://www.freetimefoto.com/add_post_footer_plugin_wordpress

PSYCHOLOGY of color in web design:
http://www.internetevangelismday.com/blog/archives/3436

WORDPRESS share options - though there's a case for offering multiple share options to various networking sites through a plugin such as Sociable, the only ones that really matter are Facebook and Twitter. You really want to make it easy for users to post to these, with visible, one-click options:
- add a conspicuous Twitter This Post link to each post:
http://richardxthripp.thripp.com/tweet-this/

- add a conspicuous Facebook 'Like' button to each post:
http://healyourchurchwebsite.com/2010/04/22/the-facebook-like-button-plugin-for-wordpress/

FACEBOOK - How To Secure Your Facebook Connection With HTTPS:
http://www.netdummy.com/2011/02/03/how-to-secure-your-facebook-connection-with-https/

GMAIL - two-stage sign in for security:
http://gmailblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/advanced-sign-in-security-for-your.html

PUTTING AUDIO ONLINE - if you wish to post audio presentations online without buying special hosting, you can post audio to YouTube and place a graphic to be visible. For embedding in a webpage, just resize the code so that only the player controls are visible. Advantage - also easily usable on mobile phones. Other options include Wordpress plugins to make it easier to host audio yourself, or adding files to a Dropbox.com account.

TAILEND ô¿ô

I had been teaching my seventh-graders about World War II, and a test question was, "What was the largest amphibious assault of all time?" Expecting to see "The D-Day invasion" as the answer, I found instead on one paper, "Moses and the plague of frogs."
