WORLD WE LIVE IN

STATE OF THE INTERNET - Keith at Mobile Advance blog writes, "Mary Meeker is Morgan Stanley's chief analyst for all things internet and is also known as the 'Queen of the Net'. Every year Mary gives a 'State of the Internet' report at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco. Every year Mary leaves the audience with a whole lot to consider and this year was no exception." He then goes on to explain some key mobile ministry takeaways from her presentation:

ADOPT A PREFECTURE FOR PRAYER - 127 million Japanese form the 2nd largest UPG in the world. 15 million live in Japan's 1800 unchurched rural areas (URAs) where 1 in 1000 are Christian. Disproportionately few missionaries and pastors in Japan work among the rural Japanese. To adopt a prefecture:

ART. Does God delight in non-Christian art?
http://spurgeon.wordpress.com/2010/05/07/does-god-delight-in-non-christian-art-tony-reinke/

FACTOIDS - in 2006 the Web transmitted monthly 5 exabytes of information - storage sufficient to have recorded every word ever spoken since the beginning! But by 2014, monthly traffic will be 64 exabytes a month. Apparently one online film distribution company uses a big bite of worldwide bandwidth merely to enable its 12 million customers to download and watch movies.

NEW WORDS entering the language: I wonder if Boxbe's term 'waitlisted' will enter wider usage? "Teacher, your assignment has been waitlisted." "Darling, the ironing has been waitlisted."

CONVERTS LEFT TO FEND FOR THEMSELVES

It's a familiary story in our churches. Converts try to integrate into an alien religious culture and way of doing things, with sometimes little help. Interestingly, Muslim converts experience the same problems, accoding to the most comprehensive survey of Muslim converts in UK, produced for the Islamic group 'Faith Matters' by Kevin Brice, himself a convert. UK converts in 2010 to Islam are estimated at 5,200. Marriage was not a key driver in 45% of cases. New converts struggled to get the support they needed from their local mosque and were often ignored or mistrusted by birthright Muslims. They also came under pressure to comply with some practices which had more to do with culture than Islam. (Hmm. Sound familiar?) http://www.brin.ac.uk/news/?p=813

It's worth observing though, that the majority religious worldview in UK and much of the West is fuzzy New Agey and vaguely theistic, owing a lot to Buddhism. http://www.internetevangelismday.com/blog/archives/1583  Back to contents

TECH TIPS

- non-techies look away now

IE6 - the browser that still will not die. Bizarrely, a browser that was introduced 8 years ago was still used by more people than those using MACs until this year. Back in January, typical usage was 10% of all users - it is now less than half that, but it is still worth checking that sites do not look too bad in it! Chrome is at almost 20%:

DELIC.IO.US is closing. But you can export your bookmarks:

IMPROVE ANDROID INTERFACE - install Open Home:

JAVASCRIPT/CSS - Show/hide several divs at once:
http://www.willmaster.com/library/features/show-hide-all-at-once.php

CSS SHADOWS: at last, easy drop-shadow with CSS. Works in all modern browsers except IE6 to 8, for which you can apply the IE-only drop shadow CSS instead:

REDIRECT ALL PAGES to new equivalents on a new domain:

CREATE your own small icons:

APPS - The differences between Android and Windows Phone 7 are mostly skin deep, so enterprising Android developers can port their current apps over to Windows Phone 7:
