Teaching English online

An enormous opportunity

Teaching English has long been a 'way in' to many cultures for evangelism. (And teaching computing is quickly becoming a similar opportunity.)

One billion people speak English at a communicable level, and many more perceive learning English as a passport to a wider world of understanding and work opportunities. Since so much of the Web is English medium, those without a sufficient level of English feel handicapped. It is particularly hard for people in the far East to learn English, because their own language structures are so very different.

There are therefore enormous opportunities for Christians to create websites and interactive CDs which teach English, yet sensitively include Christian content too. I know of only two sites which do this:

Here are major opportunities for sensitive outreach.

Easy-English pages

Evangelistic sites written specially in easy-English can also reach those who are learning English or speak it as a second language.

CD option

A teaching English course on CD could be developed and distributed extremely cheaply, and include a vast amount of content including sound and video files, interactive pronunciation testing, plus articles, testimonies, even books and Bibles. There are many other ways of using CDs in evangelism.

Language schools

There are many Christian language schools around the world to which non-Christian students can go and receive a gentle exposure to Christian friendships and the Gospel. We can classify web-pages of such schools as twin-track sites. There are about ten Christian language schools in UK.

Other TEFL and easy English resources

The sensitive use of an easy level of English for second-language speakers is very important. There are a wide range of online resources covering easy English and TEFL.
